To use an electric hospital bed, locate and understand the buttons on the attached hand controller or pendant to adjust the head and foot sections and the overall bed height. Practice using these controls to find comfortable positions, ensure the locking function (if applicable) is working, and always keep the bed's wheels locked to prevent movement. For power failures, a manual hand crank is typically available to raise or lower the bed. 

Using the Bed's Controls

1. Familiarize Yourself with the Controller:

The remote or pendant control has different buttons for adjusting the bed's head, foot, and height. 

2. Adjust Head/Foot Position:

Press the designated "Up" or "Down" buttons on the controller to raise or lower the head and foot sections of the bed. 

3. Adjust Bed Height:

Use the "Lift" or similar buttons on the controller to raise the entire bed to a comfortable height, which is especially helpful for caregivers. 

4. Utilize Special Features:

Some advanced beds include features like "Auto Contour" that simultaneously raises the head and knees, keeping the occupant in place. 

5. Use the Lock Function:

Test the bed's lock feature to prevent the patient or caregiver from accidentally changing the bed's position. 

Safety Precautions

Lock the Wheels: Keep the bed's wheels locked at all times unless the bed needs to be moved to prevent accidental falls. 

Keep Controls Accessible: Place the bed's control pad within easy reach of the bed's occupant to allow for self-adjustments. 

Use Side Rails: Keep side rails up to prevent the person from falling out of bed. 

Ensure Clear Space: Position the bed at least 6 inches from walls, windows, and doors to ensure proper operation and prevent damage. 

Avoid Smoking: Do not light matches, candles, or smoke in or near the bed. 

Power Failure 

Locate the Manual Crank:

If the bed has no power, find the emergency manual hand crank at the foot of the bed.

Turn the Crank:

Insert the crank into its designated spot and turn it (typically counter-clockwise to raise, clockwise to lower) to manually adjust the bed's position.

Additional Tips

Regularly Check Controls: Periodically check the bed's controls for any damage.
