A pole stretcher, also known as a folding stretcher or emergency stretcher, is a lightweight, portable device used by emergency responders and first aiders to safely transport an injured or sick person. It features durable, often folding, aluminum poles as the main frame, with a tough, easy-to-clean fabric surface made from materials like vinyl-coated nylon. Its ability to fold lengthwise and crosswise for compact storage makes it ideal for use in ambulances, hospitals, and other disaster situations.

Key Features

Lightweight Aluminum Poles:

The frame is constructed from strong, yet lightweight aluminum, making it easy to handle and lift.

Durable Fabric Cover:

The surface is typically a heavy-duty, vinyl-coated nylon that is resistant to stains, blood, and mildew, and is simple to clean.

Compact Design:

Many pole stretchers fold lengthwise and crosswise, allowing for compact storage in vehicles and emergency kits.

Non-slip Grips:

These provide a firm and secure hold for the handlers during transport.

High Load Capacity:

Pole stretchers are designed to hold a significant amount of weight, often around 350 lbs.

Common Uses

Emergency Services:

.Used by EMTs, firefighters, and rescue teams in disaster scenarios like floods or fires.

First Aid:

.Essential for first-aid response in industrial sites, sports fields, and other public areas.

Hospitals and Ambulances:

.Provides a practical and space-saving method for patient transport within medical facilities.

Types

Ferno Stretchers: A well-known brand of pole stretchers, including Uni-Fold and Duo-Fold models, known for their high-strength aluminum poles and vinyl-coated nylon covers.

Folding Pole Stretchers: A more generic term for stretchers that can fold for compact storage.

To use a pole stretcher, first place the canvas onto the poles by sliding the poles into its sleeves. Then, with at least two people, carefully slide the poles under the patient, keeping the patient as horizontal as possible and folded arms across their chest. Coordinate your steps and use a rhythmic walk to keep the stretcher level, ensuring the injured person isn't bounced around.

For a Blanket Stretcher (Improvised)

Prepare the Stretcher: Lay a blanket open and place one pole lengthwise across its center. Fold the blanket over the pole.

Insert Second Pole: Place the second pole across the center of the folded blanket.

Fold and Secure: Fold the free edges of the blanket over the second pole, securing the entire length.

For a Professional Canvas Stretcher

Position the Canvas: Slide the poles into the sleeves of the canvas, making sure not to touch the patient.

Prepare for Patient Transfer: Encourage the patient to fold their arms across their chest.

Log Roll and Insert: On command, log roll the patient and insert the blanket and poles underneath them.

Carrying the Patient

Communicate: Coordinate your movements by counting steps or finding a walking rhythm to keep the stretcher steady and level.

Maintain Grip: Ensure you and any other carriers have a firm grip on the stretcher poles.

Walk Rhythmically: Walk at the same pace to avoid bouncing the injured person, which could worsen their injuries.

Carry Head-First at Stairs: When going up or down stairs, the stretcher should proceed head-first.
