A semi-electric homecare bed is a hospital-style bed with electric controls for the head and foot sections but a manual, hand-crank adjustment for overall bed height. It is ideal for patients needing adjustable positioning for comfort, breathing, or transfers, but who do not require frequent, quick height changes.
For frequent positioning and comfort
Besco Basic Semi-Electric Hospital Bed:
Pros: Affordable, easy to assemble, lightweight for easier transport, and includes a remote for head and foot adjustment. According to A to Z Medical Equipment and Supplies
Cons: Manual height adjustment is the main drawback.
Besco Semi-Electric Homecare Bed:
Pros: Durable steel grid sleep surface prevents sagging, easily attaches to accessories like trapeze bars, and has a more aesthetically pleasing design than typical hospital beds. According to YouTube
Cons: Heavier than other options, and the height adjustment is manual.
For easier transfers and transfers
Besco Semi-Electric Homecare Bed:
Pros: Lowers to a height that allows users to put their feet flat on the floor for safer transfers, reducing the risk of falls and injuries. According to Besco Medical.
Cons: Some models require a manual crank for height adjustment.
For power outages
Any Semi-Electric Bed with Battery Backup:
Pros: Allows head and foot adjustment during a power outage using a 9-volt battery.
Cons: This is an add-on feature, not standard on all models.
Use the hand pendant for head and foot adjustments and the hand crank for overall bed height adjustments. Always keep the hand pendant within easy reach and ensure the bed is on a stable, locked surface. For power failures, a 9V battery can power the pendant to return the bed to a horizontal position.
This video demonstrates how to use a semi-electric hospital bed, including hand controls and hand crank:
Adjusting the head and foot
Raise head: Press the "head up" button on the hand pendant.
Lower head: Press the "head down" button on the hand pendant.
Raise foot: Press the "foot up" button on the hand pendant.
Lower foot: Press the "foot down" button on the hand pendant.
Simultaneous adjustments: Some models allow raising or lowering the head and foot sections at the same time by pressing both buttons at once.
Adjusting the overall height
Raise bed: Turn the hand crank at the foot of the bed clockwise.
Lower bed: Turn the hand crank counter-clockwise.
Note: The hand crank should only be used for height adjustments. Do not leave it attached to the bed when the motor is in use, as it can damage the bed.
Power failure: If the main power fails, the bed can be manually lowered using the hand crank. Some beds can also be lowered using a backup 9V battery connected to the hand pendant.
Safety and maintenance
Locking casters: Ensure the bed casters are locked when the bed is in its final position to prevent the bed from sliding.
Side rails: Raise the side rails as needed. To lower them, you may need to press a release button while pushing the rail down.
Keep cords clear: Make sure electrical cords are not pinched or entangled, and keep them away from heated surfaces.
Inspect controls: Periodically check the hand pendant and cords for any damage. If you see cracks or if the controls are not working correctly, have them inspected by a professional.
Report issues: If you hear unusual sounds or smell burning from the bed, stop using it immediately and have a qualified professional check it.
