An overbed table is a wheeled table with an adjustable-height surface that slides over a bed, couch, or recliner, providing a convenient, stable surface for activities like eating, reading, working on a laptop, or holding medical equipment. These tables are designed to enhance comfort and functionality for people with limited mobility, including patients recovering from illness or injury, the elderly, and those with disabilities.

Key Features

Adjustable Height:

The table's height can be easily adjusted to accommodate different users, bed heights, and activities.

Mobility:

Equipped with casters (wheels), the table can be moved and positioned where needed, often with a heavy-duty H-style base that slides under the bed for stability.

Tiltable Surface:

Many models feature a surface that can be tilted, providing an ideal angle for reading, writing, or using a tablet.

Durable Construction:

Overbed tables are built with sturdy, often steel-welded frames and durable tabletops (like wood, laminate, or sealed melamine) to withstand regular use and intensive cleaning.

Common Uses

Dining:

Provides a stable surface for meals and drinks while in bed.

Work & Hobbies:

Serves as a convenient workspace for laptops, writing, reading, or crafts.

Medical Support:

Holds essential equipment and supplies within reach for medical staff or caregivers.

Convenience:

Offers a centralized location for personal items such as phones, glasses, medications, and remote controls.

Benefits

Enhanced Comfort:

Promotes a more comfortable and ergonomic experience for those who spend a lot of time in bed.

Increased Independence:

Helps bedridden individuals maintain activities and personal care without needing to leave their bed.

Versatility:

Can also function as a wheelchair table or a multi-purpose utility surface in various home and healthcare settings.

To use an overbed table, position the base under the bed or chair, then find and engage the height adjustment lever (usually a handle under the tabletop) to raise or lower it to the desired height, finally releasing the lever to lock it securely in place before using it for eating, working, reading, or physical therapy.

1. Position the Table

Maneuver the base:

Roll or move the overbed table's base so that it fits securely under the bed. Ensure the base is stable and appropriate for the type of bed or chair it will be used with.

2. Adjust the Height

Locate the lever:

Find the height adjustment lever, which is typically located under one short edge of the tabletop.

Engage the lever:

Lift or press the lever with one hand while using your other hand to guide the tabletop to the desired height.

Lock it:

Release the lever to lock the tabletop firmly in its new position.

Check the lock:

Gently press down on the tabletop to ensure it is securely locked before placing anything on it.

3. Use the Table

For meals and personal care:

The large surface is ideal for holding food trays or personal items.

For work and hobbies:

Use it to support a laptop, books, or other materials for reading, writing, or studying.

For physical therapy:

It can serve as a stable surface for hand exercises, balance work, or other rehabilitation activities.

Important Considerations

Do not overload:

Respect the weight limit, as exceeding it can damage the table or cause it to tip.

Do not use for support:

An overbed table is not designed to be a support when getting up or for walking.

Clean regularly:

Wipe the surface with a damp, soft cloth and mild soap and water to maintain hygiene.

Check for stability:

Make sure the table is locked in position and the wheels (if any) are stabilized before using it.
