How to use the Heavy Duty Wheelchair ?

To use a manual heavy-duty wheelchair, first ensure the footrests are out of the way, then apply the parking brakes by pushing the levers forward until they click. Position yourself comfortably in the chair, place your feet on the footrests, then disengage the brakes to move the chair by pushing the handrims. To stop, re-engage the brakes and ensure they are locked. For power models, activate the chair with the power button, use the joystick to control movement, and always be aware that releasing the joystick stops the chair. 

Getting in and out:

1. Engage brakes:

Apply the parking brakes by pushing the brake levers forward until they lock into place, ensuring the wheelchair is stable. 

2. Position footrests:

Swing the leg rests to the side or remove them if they obstruct access to the chair. 

3. Transfer:

Carefully transfer your weight into the chair, holding onto the frame, not the armrests, as they may be loose. 

4. Secure position:

Once seated, adjust the footrests to support your feet and legs comfortably. 

Propelling the wheelchair (manual models):

Disengage brakes: To move, pull the brake levers backward to unlock the wheels. 

Self-propelling: Place your hands on the large handrims on the rear wheels and push them forward in a smooth motion to propel yourself. 

Carer-propelling: If a caregiver is pushing, ensure they maintain a straight back and use their legs and body weight, not just their arms. 

Using a power model (if applicable): 

Power on: Push the power button to turn the chair on.

Adjust speed: Use the speed control button or dial to set a safe speed before you begin.

Control direction: Use the joystick to move forward, backward, and turn by pushing it in the desired direction.

Stop: To stop, simply release the joystick, and the chair will stop.

Important safety tips:

Lock brakes:

Always lock the brakes before transferring in or out of the chair. 

Check frame:

Lift the wheelchair by its frame, not the armrests, which may not be strong enough to support your weight. 

Cushioning:

Ensure a proper, well-fitting cushion is used for comfort and pressure relief.
