Products Description

Plastic Bedpan and stainless bedpan

A bedpan is a shallow, typically plastic or metal, vessel used by a person who cannot get out of bed to collect urine or feces. Designed to fit under a bedridden person, it provides a means for toileting when a traditional toilet is inaccessible due to illness, injury, or limited mobility, promoting hygiene and independence.

Purpose of a bedpan

Mobility issues:

It is essential for patients with severe fatigue, fractures (especially in the hip or lower extremities), or other debilitating illnesses that prevent them from getting out of bed.

Post-surgery recovery:

Bedpans are often used after surgical procedures to assist patients who are temporarily immobile.

High fall risk:

For individuals who have a high risk of falling or further injury, using a bedpan can prevent accidents by eliminating the need to get up.

Types of bedpans

Regular bedpan: A standard-sized bedpan for general use.

Fracture pan: A bedpan with one flat end, making it easier to slide under patients with hip or lower-extremity injuries who find it difficult to lift their hips.

Bariatric bedpan: Larger capacity bedpans designed for individuals with higher weight.

How to use a bedpan

1. Prepare:

Wash your hands and put on gloves. You may want to apply baby powder to the rim of the bedpan for easier placement.

2. Position the patient:

Assist the patient by helping them turn to the side and carefully sliding the bedpan under their body. Alternatively, if the patient can lift their hips, help them do so.

3. Use the bedpan:

Once the bedpan is correctly positioned, help the patient to recline or sit in a comfortable position.

4. Clean up:

After the patient is finished, carefully remove the bedpan, empty its contents into the toilet, and rinse it thoroughly.

5. Finalize:

Assist the patient with any necessary cleaning, reposition them, and ensure they are comfortable.

What is the kinds of the Bedpan?

The primary types of bedpans are the standard (or regular) bedpan and the fracture (or slipper) bedpan, designed for different patient mobility levels. Other kinds include bariatric bedpans for heavier patients, and either disposable or reusable options made from materials like plastic or stainless steel.

Here's a breakdown of the different types:

By Design/Use

Standard/Regular Bedpan:

.

This is the traditional design, resembling a toilet bowl. It has a larger capacity and requires the patient to be able to lift their hips to place it underneath.

Fracture/Slipper Bedpan:

.

Smaller and shaped like a dustpan with a tapered, flat end. This design allows it to be slid under patients with limited mobility, like those recovering from hip fractures or replacements, without needing to lift their hips high.

Bariatric Bedpan:

.

An extra-durable and heavy-duty type designed for individuals with higher body weights.

Female Urinal:

.

Some bedpans are also designed to be used as a urinal by women, providing a convenient and discreet option.

By Material/Disposability

Plastic:

.

A common material for both standard and fracture bedpans. They can be reusable after proper cleaning and disinfection or designed for single use.

Stainless Steel:

.

Used for some heavy-duty or bariatric bedpans and can be autoclaved (sterilized with steam) for reuse.

Disposable:

.

Made from biodegradable or recycled materials and are intended for single-use to ensure hygiene and convenience.

Key Factors for Choosing a Bedpan

Patient Mobility: Fracture pans are ideal for those who cannot lift their hips, while standard pans work for those who can.

Body Weight: Bariatric models provide the necessary support for heavier patients.

Hygiene: Disposable bedpans or liners offer a high level of cleanliness, while reusable options require thorough sanitization.
